The weekend of Jan. 20 began just like any other at the quiet 11-acre Vogel Equine Retirement Farm. Fresh snow blanketed the ground and 13 retired horses were let out into a fenced in corral area for grazing and exercise. That was when the day took a turn for the worse.

Victoria Vogel, owner of Vogel Equine Retirement Farm, recalled hearing the loud humming sound of snowmobilers riding through part of her property and the Com-Ed easement adjacent to the area where the horses remain corralled.
