When Lincoln-Way East’s football team takes the field before each week’s game, it is quite a spectacle.

The Griffins crowd together and storm the field, led by a player carrying an American flag. When the state’s top-ranked team comes flying out to go to work, there is a certain intimidation level in the air.

This season, though, there is a deeper meaning behind the show.

Each week, a different East player is carrying the flag onto the field, and in the process, they are honoring family members who are currently serving in the military or have in the past.
